This is Real Art: The Copy Book

This is Real Art (featured in the soon-to-be-realised Edition 7 of Process Journal) have recently completed the design for The Copy Book, published by Taschen and D&AD.

This book is about the art of advertising writing, so legibility was a major factor in the design solution. We wanted the copy to be legible in all the featured work. So it was all reproduced at a large enough size that allowed the copy to be read. And because the subject matter is all about reading, the cover design was created at an eye-tracking lab. We recorded real eye-tracking data of someone reading the book title.

Packed with fantastic examples, the whole book — from the concept, to the cover, to the internal layout — looks brilliant. We already have one on order and so should you!

—
Available directly from Tashen here.

Klim: Pitch & new website

Klim Type Foundry (Kris Sowersby featured in Edition Three), has just launched new typeface, Pitch — a love letter to the typewriter — which includes five weights in both roman and italics available exclusively from vllg.com. Sharing almost exactly the same dimensions as Courier, Pitch is a "10-pitch" typeface (meaning at 10 point it will fit 10 letters to the inch). With a smaller cap height, and a generous x-height, Pitch avoids the obvious analogue parrels to typewritten text (irregular strike, soft outlines, fluctuating baselines etc.) and instead features angled brackets, ball terminals and monoline strokes — combining to form a unique yet very analogue typeface.

In addition to Pitch, Klim has also launched a new website. Featuring a very mobile-friendly version, you can try all his fonts on the site from 20px up to 300px, as well as read into all Kris' processes and the design of each of the fonts. For anyone with an interest in type design, this site is an absolute gold mine!

—
www.klim.co.nz

Self-proclaimed as an 'ideas business', This is Real Art live up to their claim. With a folio full of clean and sophisticated design, they deliver thought-proking pieces across all mediums from print to moving image. Among these, TiRA have recently completed the identity and stationery for Privacy International, a human rights 'watchdog' organisation. With an emphasis on projecting personal information, the business card is designed to have the top, bottom and right-hand side torn off to open it and see the details. A lovely, tactile and brilliantly executed design.

StudioMakgill / Oliver Spencer / GFSmith

StudioMakgill (featured in Edition Three) have recently teamed up with GFSmith on a very appealing new print promotion which was launched at the Oliver Spencer London Fashion Week show.

"Naturalis Works is a series of brochures and films designed around a series of conversations with acclaimed craftspeople working across diverse fields. They support the belief that selecting the perfect materials is a critical part of the creative process. Naturalis Works #1 looks at the work of british fashion designer, Oliver Spencer and how his almost obsessive approach to process and materials is at the centre of his craft."

Prior to this, StudioMakgill also released a short film which works in partnership with the print. You can view the film here.

Make sure to check out their site for more images, as the piece is filled with great details and techniques.

KentLyons: New site, new work

KentLyons (featured in Edition Four) have recently launched their new website. This update reveals some incredible imagery and presents an array of new creative projects, including the studio’s work for Dickens 2012 — a global campaign, which recognizes and celebrates 200 years of Charles Dickens literature.

As well as designing the identity and guidelines for Dickens 2012 (a modern interpretation of Dickens’s original signature), KentLyons have produced Night Walks; the first in a series of six newspapers designed to bring the work of Dickens to new and old audiences. Mirroring this notion, the studio has also manufactured Night Walks as an iPad app. Whilst the printed edition of Night Walks emulates the installment form in which most of Dickens' work was published, the digitized publication exhibits reformatted text that runs alongside a modern photographic journal, detailing some of the locations that Dickens visited on his famed walks.

The Night Walks iPad app is available through iTunes in the App Store.

—
www.kentlyons.com

Spin: Update

Spin (featured in Edition One) have just updated their site with two jobs: a new magazine for Christie's and a film title-sequence for Taking Life (pictured). Filmed in their studio on a 7D using Ikea glass and a mixture of water and olive oil, the title-sequence mesmerises the viewer with the organic and molecular behaviour of the liquid contrasted by distortion of the Helvetica text.

Taking Life is a dark comic tale of murder and motherhood — directed by Steve Reeves.

Toko x 4,176 Pages

Dutch expats from the now Sydney based creative practice, Toko (featured in Edition Four) have just announced the completion of an undeniably impressive and exciting project. Designed specifically for the Chinese International Design Competition, which this year pays tribute to the year of the Dragon, the team has created a colossal book titled ‘Long Story Made in China’. Case bound and measuring 286mm high x 171mm deep x 245mm, the volume comprises an unbelievable 4,716 pages celebrating each year of the Dragon since it’s supposed origins in 2697 BCE.

‘Long Story Made in China’ is incrusted with divinely executed details such as pristine gold foils, a bold red linen cover, unique digital foils and five red satin ribbons: inserted every 1,000 pages to symbolize each featured millennia. With this project, Toko aimed to convey a conceptual interpretation of the complex and vibrant history of the Chinese Dragon but the finished product surpasses that objective. The monumental hardcover not only embodies the unique and enchanting spirit of China and her history but also demonstrates the way in which visual design can capture and portray philosophies that extend far beyond simple aesthetics. A victory for Toko and the creative world, ‘Long Story Made in China’ is well worth a look.

Here is an excerpt from their press release:

"As part of China’s 2012, year of the Dragon celebrations, Sydney based design agency Toko was invited by the China International Design Competition Committee to judge the first ever annual design competition in Beijing last September. This competition, hosted by PoloArts, AIGA and Beijing Design Week in conjunction with the Capital Museum of China, aims to promote communications, exchange and interaction between China and the World.

Besides judging, Toko, as part of an international group of judges including renowned designers; Brian Collins (USA), Jianping He (Berlin/Beijing) and Kan Tai-Keung (Hong Kong), was invited to create an original design or artwork for the world-class ‘Chinese Dragon Exhibition’ which opens on 23 February 2012 at the Capital Museum of China.

To grasp the story of the Chinese Dragon and spark the imagination required to create the artwork, Toko participated in ‘Dragon’ specific tours, workshops and discussions, and whilst still in China quickly came to the realisation that creating an original Dragon piece would be a daunting task. The Chinese Zodiac, being an integral part of Chinese culture and society, both young and old, takes on mythical proportions, furthermore complicated by the accessibility of traditional and contemporary Dragon examples.

Toko decided to capture the sheer scale, complexity and history of the Chinese Dragon in a book. A monumental but foremost conceptual interpretation of the Dragon. The book celebrates every Dragon year since it’s supposed origins in 2697 BCE, based on the most widely ‘tolerated’ myth.

The 4,716 page book carries the title ‘Long Story Made in China’. ‘Long’ as in the rich culture, cultivated over thousands of years, and ‘Long’ as in the Chinese word for Dragon (Long story / Dragon story). The book (edition 5) should be seen as a paper sculpture and is a tribute to Chinese culture by western interpretation.

To succeed in creating this mammoth project, Toko sought a collaborative partner in Sydney’s Digitalpress. The team’s enthusiasm, passion and expertise made the project a reality from start to finish."

A big thanks to Michael and Eva for supplying the information and images — and on completing the job!

—
www.toko.nu
www.digitalpress.com.au

—
To read our complete interview with Toko about their work for Dutch Fashion Here & Now, you can purchase Edition Four is available in our online store here.

Commercial Type: Marion

Commericial Type (featured in Edition Four) have just publicly released the typeface Marion! While it was first show in the Thieves Like Us exhibition in October 2011 (see above image), here is the official press release:

"Commercial Type is pleased to announce the release of Marian, a new typeface family in 19 styles designed by Paul Barnes. Marian is a series of faithful revivals of some of the classics from the typographic canon: Austin, Baskerville, Bodoni, Fournier, Fleischman, Garamont, Granjon, Kis and van den Keere. The twist is that they have all been rendered as a hairline of near uniform weight, revealing the basic structure at the heart of the letterforms. Together they represent a concept: to recreate the past both for and in the present.

Stretching over a period of nearly two and a half centuries from the mid sixteenth century to the early nineteenth century, they represent a period when the serif typeface as used in book typography was the dominant style. From the high Renaissance of Granjon and Garamont through to the Scotch roman; all the styles are represented: old style, transitional, and finally the modern. Meretriciously researched from original sources, together they represent a concept album of cover versions of the standards of type design.

Faithful to the originals, Marian comes with small capitals in all nine roman styles, with lining and non-lining figures, with swash capitals (1554, 1740, 1800 & 1820), alternate and terminal characters (1554 & 1571). And like the hidden track so beloved of the concept album, Marian is completed by a Blackletter based on the work of Henrik van den Keere.

Marian was first introduced in the temporary exhibition "Thieves Like Us", a collaboration between Commercial Type and designer and artist Dino Sanchez in New York in October 2011. The show explored the possibilities offered by these single stroke forms in a variety of media, including neon, nails, and pure light on a mirrored surface."

—
www.commercialtype.com

Studio Makgill: Boxpark

Update: Studio Makgill have recently completed a stunning typographic identity for Boxpark.

From Studio Makgill: ‘Boxpark, the world's first pop-up shopping mall, is now open in Shoreditch. Fabricated from over sixty recycled shipping containers over two levels, the temporary development looks at retail in a new light – a solution that is affordable, environmental and flexible.

By utilising land that has been earmarked for future development, Boxpark operates as a fully functioning pop-up mall for the period of its lease and then can be picked up and moved to a new home. All this, whilst having a much smaller impact on the environment than most other retail developments – it is, after all, made of recycled materials.

We were appointed to create the branding for Boxpark over a year ago. We designed a strong, simple solution that was unashamedly industrial – a design that celebrates the brutal ‘sea cans’ rather than trying to camouflage them. Our work included the graphic identity, the signage and wayfinding system, marketing materials, tone of voice and website.’

The complete set of project images can be viewed on Studio Makgill’s website here.
—
Studio Makgill’s work for The Lollipop Shoppe was featured in Process Journal Edition Three.

Design Museum Shop

Process Journal stockist, The Design Museum Shop (London) has recently undergone and identity update. Completed by Edition One contributor Spin, replacing the now five year old identity originally developed by Build (Edition Four).

The identity features a new typographic treatment, utlising the existing Design Museum logotype and the addition of +SHOP, as well as a bold vertical line. We certainly admire the simplicity of the new identity and look forward to seeing it applied further in future applications.

For further reading and images the identity can be viewed at:
http://spin.co.uk/latest-work/design-museum-shop-identity-3/

And Build’s original identity at:
http://wearebuild.com/archives/design-museum-shop-identity/
—
And don’t forget, our special feature 10,000 words with Build can be found in our library article here.

Unit Editions: Projekt

Just in time for Christmas, the team from Unit Editions (featured in Edition 1) have just released a new publication: Projekt: The Polish journal of visual art and design. Written by Charlotte West and Edgar Bak, the fifth publication in the Unit series covers the story of the Polish magazine Projekt and it's struggle to survive against the Soviet domination of the times. Here is the official press release from Unit Editions:

"Projekt: The Polish journal of visual art and design (Unit 05)
By Charlotte West and Edgar Bak

Polish posters, and Polish graphic arts in general, from the middle years of the 20th century, stand as vivid exemplars of the power of visual expression.

Formed in 1955, Projekt magazine was one of the few publications to showcase the art and design of not only work from behind the Iron Curtain, but also of the West.

Particularly striking were its visually rich covers, many of them created by members of the famous Polish Poster School – amongst them Henryk Tomaszewski, Józef Mroszczak and Jan Lenica.

This book tells the story of Projekt’s tortuous history as it struggled to survive against the backdrop of Soviet domination. As a satellite state of the Soviet Union, Poland was subject to censorship and repression, and Polish artists and designers were expected to adhere to the official Soviet artform of Social Realism. But Poland has a long history of rebellion and opposition, and this contrarian spirit can be seen in the pages and covers of Projekt.

Here, for the first time in book form, is an analysis and appreciation of this heroic journal. Design writer Charlotte West and Polish graphic designer, Edgar Bak show how Projekt can sit alongside any of the great design and art magazines of the past half-century."

—
Designed by Spin, Projekt is availble for purchase at: www.uniteditions.com

Design Assembly: 3

"3 years, 148 posts, 904 comments and over 2.5m visits later, Design Assembly (as we know it) is no more."

Having co-published a number of articles with Design Assembly, we were very saddened to hear the news that the site will no longer be operating. Over the past three years, Design Assembly has engaged the design community online through discussions and discourse, as well as co-publishing printed articles for a number of magazines and journals. Operating purely as a non-profit forum, DA has been great for our industry and will surely be missed. To celebrate their third birthday and retirement, Matt Judge has worked tirelessly to put together a book, three infact, with over 100 articles, comments and images form the DA archives.

Here is the rest of their official press release:

"But, instead of slipping quietly into the night, we wanted to capture all the energy that’s gone into making and maintaining the site and put it to a greater cause — fighting cancer.

‘3’ archives over 100 published articles, comments included, as well as showcasing new and exclusive words and images from some incredible people.

100% of the profits from the sale of this publication will be shared proportionately between 3 charities with a combined global reach:

Cancer Research UK — United Kingdom
LIVESTRONG — North America
WCRF International — Rest of world

The total amount raised will be distributed proportionately between these 3 charities according to the percentage of profits generated by each catchment. For example, if 50% of profits are raised by pledges from US billing addresses, 50% of profits will be donated to LIVESTRONG, and so on.

According to Cancer Research UK, 1-in-3 of us will be diagnosed with some form of cancer in our lifetime. Can design make a difference?

Let’s find out."

—
Congratulations and thanks to Matt Judge for all the work over the years, and for putting together this brilliant looking book for a good cause.

Edition Six

It has been a huge year for us here at Process (we say that every year, but this one is certainly no exception!). As well as our regular release of the journal, we have also launched our Edition One iPad app, and first special Edition; Process 4.5, and not to mention the complete design refresh of Edition Five. Whilst we have still remained on schedule (originally to launch just before Christmas), we have decided to take a short break and hold back the launch of Edition Six until January 2012. Not only to replenish our creative spirits, but this little bit of extra time gives us an opportunity to continue refine and polish this latest edition. (Not to mention how many copies we might possibly to loose in the pandemonium of Christmas post!) However, with all content in, what we can tell you is Edition Six is shaping up to be an absolute cracker, with features from Sea, BVD and Dowling Duncan just to name a few.

Until then, keep an eye on our twitter in coming weeks for our Christmas specials and we look forward to another exciting year of Process publications in 2012! Happy Holidays!

The International Office: Update

The International Office, based in New Zealand and featured in Edition Five, have just updated their site with some striking new work. As always, the work is structured and refined with clever use of typography, grid and a limited colour palette. Pictured is the Object Lessons Catelogue for Adam Art Gallery, which 'was conceived in the wake of the digital download. The project investigated the visual forms of music as a way to address issues of documentation and distribution. It was curious about how histories accrue around this object as a material artefact and as a commodity. We used Courier as the main type to give the project a feel of reference and order.'

—
For our full feature on The International Office, Process Journal Edition Five is now shipping worldwide from our online store.

Thieves Like Us

Thieves Like Us is a collaboration between Commercial Type (featured Edition Four) and designer and artist Dino Sanchez. This popup showroom will exhibit Marian, a new typeface by Paul Barnes that reduces classic models of serif type design to their basic skeletal forms, exploring the possibilities offered by these single stroke forms in a variety of media.

Marian is a collection of revivals. They are neither strict revivals for the designs are not accurate recreations, nor are they interpretations per se. Instead they reduce the historical models to the basic skeletal forms. Nine seriffed faces from the sixteenth to nineteenth century, all considered important designs, have been treated in the same fashion. Together they represent a concept: to recreate the past for the present.

Process Journal Edition Five has arrived!

Comprising of a more flexible grid, updated captioning, new contents page and a brand new cover, the updated design still stays true to our original objective: ‘capturing beautiful work in a printed publication that allows the design to do the talking’. We feel these changes have made it that little bit easier to read and a touch more refined. As part of the update, we have also revised our structure. Now comprising two essays, ten interview features and two written profiles, we feel this adjusted structure allows us to include a greater diversity of content and assists us in defining what Process is really about.

Edition Five Features:
Christopher Doyle, Thomas Williams, Farrow, Aesop, Winkreative, Moving Brands, Brogen Averill, Holt Design, Gavillet & Rust, HORT, The International Office, L2M3, Xavier Encinas and Research & Development.

It’s been a little while since Edition Four was released, and though it was about time we gave a quick update. Edition Five was due to be released around now, but the bad news we have had some unforeseen production issues, which has caused our timeline to be shifted back by a couple weeks.

The good news however, is that in this time we have made some big changes here at Process HQ, and some of the things to look forward to with Edition Five include:

— A design re-fresh and update to the entire journal including a brand new cover.
— A revised content structure, featuring two new editorial pieces.
— An updated distribution service, allowing quicker delivery not only within Australia, but also to our overseas readers.
— New heavy duty packaging, that will ensure your copy arrives safely (even if your post man/woman decides to use your copy as a Frisbee).

We are not only confident that these changes will result in a better publication, but will also allow us to grow and evolve Process Journal in ways we could only previously imagine. In the meantime, if you would like to be amongst the first to receive Edition Five, head on over to our online store and purchase a subscription here. (Of course all existing subscribers will be receiving their copy at the same time).

And don’t worry, time has not been wasted and we are already well underway on Edition Six, with over half of our contributors confirmed. Keep an eye on our site and twitter for updates next week with a launch date and full list of contributors to be announced.

Klim x The International Office

New Zealand typographer Klim — AKA Kris Sowersby — has just produced a new type specimen designed by his Wellington neighbours The International Office. Comprised of Duncan Forbes and Elaina Hamilton, The International Office have now produced four specimens for Klim. This is what they have to say about it:

"We had often discussed with Kris doing a type specimen on newsprint. His previous specimens were small booklets so we thought this was a good opportunity to print on a larger scale. We agreed the talk 'A Search for Tradition' Douglas Lilburn gave in 1946 was a good fit with how we think of New Zealand design. Lilburn talks about how we have no musical tradition as we are a young remote country. Like magpies we take the good things we get to experience from larger creative eco systems."

—
For our feature on Klim's typeface Tiempos, Process Journal Edition Three is shipping worldwide from our online store.

Marque: Riverside Museum

Marque, featured in Edition Four and based in Glasgow, London and New York, have recently completed the wayfinding and signage system for the new Zaha Hadid designed Riverside Museum. Initially challeneged by the tremendous column-free exhibition space, Marque collaborated with the design team at the Museum as well as Zaha Hadid's team to produce unique freestanding, moveable monoliths with interchangeable graphics panels. Polished edge fluorescent acrylic was chosen for the primary material, while the design was inspired by the visual language of the architecture that includes dot matrix, extruded form and orthogonal finishing. Read more about the job at Marque's site here.

New York design magazine, Print, have just published a special edition designed and co-directed by Spin (featured in Edition One). Sourcing contributions from Jim Biber, Ben Bos, Ian Cartlidge (featured Edition One) and Adrian Shaughnessy (also featured in Edition One!), this issue of Print looks eclectic and is filled with colourful overprints, large typography and very dynamic layouts — be sure to pick one up!

Build: New Projects

The good news: we’ve been absolutely flat-out on Process Journal Edition Five and it is almost done! The bad news: our news section has been a little quiet because of it. Not to worry, we’re now back on top of our regular news updates and though we would kick it off with an old favorite, Build. Over the last few weeks Build have updated their site with several excellent new projects including work for 3angrymen, a Wim Crouwel print and an identity (that I absolute love) for T&Cake.

If that's not enough, don’t forget to have a read of our interview with Michael and Nicola: 10,000 Words with Build or pick up a copy of Process Journal Edition Four.
—
www.wearebuild.com

The home of Phraya is to be found in the province of Nakhom Pathom, commonly regarded as the site of the first city in Thailand. A bountiful source of sugar cane, this enticing corner of south-east Asia also provides the perfect climate for the age-old craft of rum making.' Well, neither did we.
Spin: Launch new website

It is no secret we are big fans of their work and we’ve been waiting for this one for a while: Spin have just launched a new website! Taking on a simple two column layout with top and left aligned navigation, the site feels familiar to navigate, but also includes several unique and considered UI features including overlaid project descriptions (simply activated with small ‘+’ in the top left hand corner of each project). The catalogue of work featured is nothing short of a stunning collection and is easily navigated through on both a desktop and mobile browser. The departure from flash on their previous website is certainly welcomed, and we look forward to all future updates.

Spin’s Identity work for Haunch of Venison was comprehensively featured in Process Journal Edition One.
—
www.spin.co.uk

Process iPad App has arrived!

With so much ongoing debate of print versus digital, as a publisher of printed publications we felt it was our duty to comprehensively investigate the current state of digital publishing. After researching and downloading every digital publication we could get our hands on, we decided the best way to complete our research was to get some hands-on experience with designing and developing our very own iPad app.

Given the huge number of requests we have received for back issues, it was an easy decision to release the out-of-print Process Journal Edition One in digital form.

Unlike many other digital publications the Process Journal digital release is not just an exported document from the original printed version; it is a standalone release, completely re-designed from the ground up, and features additional content, interactive image galleries and all of the written feature pieces from the first edition.

Admittedly, releasing our content digitally in its entirety conflicts with one of our primary objectives, which is about ‘capturing beautiful work in a printed publication’. But we believe this one-time experimental release has provided us with an invaluable perspective on the current state of digital publishing, and how it impacts what we do as independent publishers. Developing our own app provided us with a useful side-by-side comparison in designing for both printed and digital mediums. Without giving too much away, our findings were surprising, to say the least, and a full write-up of our research, observations and conclusions will be published in the upcoming Process Journal Edition Five.

Edition One Features:
Re-public, 3 Deep Design, Unit Editions, Heydays, Norm, Hofstede, Spin, Kim Holtermand, Mainstudio, SouthSouthWest, Kleber, Tim George and Cartlidge Levene. It also includes design responses from Dominic Hofstede (Hofstede Design) and Matt Judge (Design Assembly).

The official Process Journal iPad app is now available for free download in the app store.

Stockholm Design Lab (featured in Edition Three) has created the identity for a new landmark in Copenhage: the Bella Sky Hotel.

Direct from the press release: Today Bella Sky (part of Comwell) opens and will be Scandinavia's largest hotel. It creates a distinct new profile on the Copenhagen skyline with the architecture of 3XN. The two towers reach up to 76,5 meters, and lean out 15 degrees.

“Our goal was to turn the powerful architecture into graphic design. We wanted to create a simple system and a memorable form.“ says Björn Kusoffsky Creative Director Stockholm Design Lab.

SDL has created the new identity and signage system for the 814 room hotel. A unique typeface is made taking its inspiration from the architecture and is used throughout the design system; hotelrooms, amenities, menues, signage, merchandise and other supporting material. A stunning 17 meter long sign welcomes the guests. The identity for three restaurants and sky bar is designed to support TEA’s interior of Bella Sky.

Process: 4.5 Launches!

Process 4.5 is the first in a series of special edition Process publications. Printed in only black on lightweight 70gsm Bond, Process 4.5 purposely contrasts the usual high production qualities of the quarterly journal, as well acting as a platform to experiment with different formats and production techniques. The publication's content is a reflection and retrospective of the first four editions of Process Journal. Consisting of three major parts, the first a comprehensive essay written by typographer and design-lecturer Brad Haylock.
Unit Editions: TD 63—73

TD 63—73

Yesterday with a satisfying thud, a copy of TD63—73 landed on our doorstep. TD 63—73 is the latest Unit Editions publication documenting ‘Total Design and it’s pioneering role in graphic design’. At first look Unit 03 has really taken a step up in production quality, with a beautiful linen cover with a deep black foil, and a lovely uncoated section of exactly 63 pages (nice touch). To give you an idea of how I feel about content, last night I sat down to have a quick flick through, which then resulted in three solid hours of reading, (cliche intended) I simply could not put it down. The content is well written, well researched and utterly fascinating. And of course, the design is up to the usual extremely high Unit Editions standard.

Borrowed from the Unit Editions Website:
TD 63-73: Total Design and its pioneering role in graphic design is a unique insider’s account of the evolution of Total Design, one of the most important and influential design groups in the history of visual design.

Written by Ben Bos, a key member of the studio, the book describes how a group of idealistic Dutch designers came together to form a multidisciplinary design studio that helped shape the future of graphic design.

Total Design began in Amsterdam in 1963. Ben Bos joined the founders (Wim Crouwel, Benno Wissing, Friso Kramer and the Schwarz Brothers) from the outset. Together, and individually, they set new benchmarks for identity design, cultural design, exhibition design and product design. These benchmarks have rarely, if ever, been surpassed.
TD 63-73 is the story of Total Design’s golden period. It contains hundreds of images from the TD archive, and in Ben Bos’s text the reader is given an ‘up close and personal’ history of a design group that remains as important today as it did when it launched in the icy winter of 1963.

TD63-73 is is available right now, and you should buy it.
—
www.uniteditions.com

Loose Leaf: Edition One

Loose Leaf Edition 01 has launched and far out, are we impressed. If you haven't gathered by know we are already huge fans of Manual / Tom Crabtree’s (Featured Edition 2 & 3) work and Loose Leaf is no exception. I commented last week that the Loose Leaf logo was one of our favorite we have seen in quite a while, and same goes with the publication. Supplied with aluminum push pins, loose leaf is a 10 sheet large format publication and the perfect addition to any studio/office/home/bedroom wall. In our humble opinion, Loose Leaf is brilliant and one of the most original examples of publication design we have seen, period.

‘The launch edition is anchored in the area where we live and work, the San Francisco Bay, with contributors currently residing here, or producing work inspired by this place.
Loose Leaf features commissioned and previously unpublished artworks in addition to largescale reproductions of a handful of existing works. For this first edition, Jeff Canham handpainted a sign that pays tribute to the legendary song ‘I Left My Heart in San Francisco’. Dwight Eschliman deconstructed a silk gown by fashion designer Louisa Parris. Mark Giglio created a shrine to the (lack of) sun in San Francisco’s notoriously chilly summers. Michelle McCarron ventured into the depths of the Stanford Linear Particle Accelerator. Andrew Zuckerman presented us with an alternate view of San Francisco’s famous architecture.’

Avaliable for purchase right now.
http://www.looseleafeditions.com/
http://manualcreative.com/

10,000 Words with Build

Often when we conduct interviews for each edition of Process Journal, the result is an inspiring and in-depth conversation that looks behind the scenes and at the inner workings of our selected designers/studios. However once transcribed, these comprehensive interviews usually range somewhere between 8–10,000 words. Whilst we obtain all of this brilliant and insightfull content, this presents a great challenge to us; to reduce the word count down to fit in the printed publication (usually around 2,500–3,000 words per feature). This is a real shame, because as much as we would love to print a 1,000 page publication, it is just not feasable.

So, as part of our website relaunch and our ‘hybrid’ publishing model, we came up with the idea of our online library, where word count is irrelevant. This gives us a platform to publish extended versions of our interviews, that would have otherwise not seen the light of day.

For this paticular piece, we literally travelled around the world all the way to freezing cold London. After landing and an hour long train ride, I arrived at the studio otherwise known as Build. I would like also like to extend a big thank you to Michael & Nicola for taking the time, and inviting me into their studio to conduct this interview.

—
Click here to read the feature.

Process: Four Point Five

We are very pleased to officially announce our first (of hopefully many) special Edition Process publications: Process 4.5.

The publication is a reflection, and in a way a celebration, of the first four editions of Process Journal. Consisting of three major parts, the first a comprehensive essay written by typographer and design-lecturer Brad Haylock. The second is a typographic analysis of each of the typefaces featured in editions one to four, including type samples and specimens. And finally, we asked a selection of contributors from editions one to four the simple question: ‘what is your process’. Including responses from Brett Phillips (3 Deep Design), Michael C. Place (Build), Mason Wells (Bibliothèque), Tom Crabtree (Manual) and Tony Brook (Spin), we are pretty excited to say the least. Whilst we don’t want to say too much just yet, you can expect a new production process and an all-new format for the publication. We are currently undergoing the finishing touches, and planning release within the next two weeks. For all the latest updates, keep an eye on our news section or follow us on twitter @followprocess.

Studio Makgill: Boxpark

Studio Makgill (featured in Edition Three) have just updated their site with the new project Boxpark: "Boxpark will be the world's first pop-up mall. Due to open in August 2011 in Shoreditch, London and fabricated from sixty shipping containers over two levels, the concept is to create a brand mix that sets it apart from the uniform British high street. The project will offer low cost retail, creating a genuine opportunity for smaller brands to dip their toe into the water and for larger brands looking to move east.
The site has been earmarked for major development in 2016, but this is what makes the Boxpark concept so smart – when the lease is up, the entire mall will be able to be picked up and carried to a new location. Clever stuff."
Having a lovely industrial-feel to it, we hope this continues after 2016!

Monomalist: the latest theme from Andreas Pihlström, the brains behind Suprmarket and Suprb (featured in Edition Two), is a super clean and minimalist word press theme. "Designed to let the blog posts speak instead of the other way around. It’s built on the popular 960 grid." Features include a built in Twitter "Tweet" button, built in Facebook "Like" button, a sidebar showing your Twitter avatar (optional) and also a sidebar showing your Twitter followers (optional).
Bibliothèque: Boskke

Featured in Edition Three, London studio Bibliothèque have updated their site with two new projects: D&AD Workout, and the Boskke identity (pictured). As always, their work is sublime—a combination of strong conceptual and super tight design, always bedded down on a strict grid. We at Process always love their stripped back and highly functional stationery, which is pictured above on the right.

Spin/Design Museum

To coincide with the current Wim Crouwel exhibition at the Design Museum, Spin have curated a series of posters by their favourite design studios from around the world. The designers were commissioned to submit a poster based on the dimensions and grid of the legendary original Stedelijk Museum posters, as created by Crouwel during his time as the museum’s designer. Pictured above is the poster by David Pidgeon (www.pidgeon.com.au), a great execution of David's love of mathematics and perspective combined with Crouwel's grid and inspired colour scheme.

Spin have also produced a complete series of prints, posters, mugs, badges, bookmarks, bags and more to celebrate the exhibition.
These are all available from the Design Museum Shop.

Unit Editions: Wim Crouwel

New from Unit Editions: "Wim Crouwel: A Graphic Odyssey - Catalogue (Cover No.3 pictured) offers a comprehensive overview of the work of one of the most important and influential graphic designers of the modern era.

Published to celebrate the major retrospective at the Design Museum in London, this book presents the work of a graphic titan.

But this is not a usual formulaic design book: instead, Crouwel’s posters, catalogues, documents, manuals - even his stamps and personal photographs - are presented in the raw, bare-concrete setting of the Crouwel archive.

As Tony Brook, the exhibition’s curator and the book’s co-editor and designer notes: ‘This approach exposes the process of making an exhibition, and of imparting the sense of discovery as archive boxes are opened to reveal hidden treasure. It also gives a greater sense of Crouwel’s work as objects that functioned in the real world rather than mere representations seen in only in books.’

The book contains an interview with Wim Crouwel conducted by Tony Brook. During the course of the discussion, Crouwel describes his early life, his formative years – including his period at Total Design – and his philosophy of design.

This all-encompassing catalogue of Crouwel’s work demonstrates that he is that rarest of phenomena – a bona fide graphic design master.

The book comes with three different cover photographs, and a variety of title stickers. You can select the cover image you want (stickers are random)."

—

Loose Leaf

Loose Leaf: a new publishing venture by Process friend and contributor Tom Crabtree from Manual...

"What surrounds us, influences us.

Loose Leaf is a hybrid format of publication & print series. It exists in the form of a collection of unbound and large-format printed art works. Published twice a year, Loose Leaf intends to present images in a physical, livable form, a distinct departure from the online consumption of visual material that pervades our lives.

Loose Leaf comes packaged ready to be installed, not stored. Leaves are hole-punched for placement on a wall with small pushpins. Its unbound format allows the viewer to edit, select, and reshuffle images on an ongoing basis.

Conceived and curated by San Francisco design studio Manual, Loose Leaf is a collaborative effort. Each edition features newly commissioned works by contemporary artists, designers, photographers, illustrators, and writers that have caught the attention of the studio.

Launching and available to buy online, April 2011"

—
www.looseleafeditions.com
www.manualcreative.com

Our Beautiful Game is a SB Studio project, a publication filled with beautiful imagery, visually documenting the printing process. As lovers of print, this publication got us very excited to say the least. Photographed by the talented Dan Kenyon, a selection of the images can be viewed on the Our Beautiful Game Website, and shots of the actual printed publication be seen on SB Studio’s flickr. Enjoy

Process and 2011

It has been an exciting year for us at Process, three Journals down and a fourth in the works! Although Edition four was originally scheduled for release at the end of December, we will be taking a short break and launching late January, but never fear, we promise it will be worth the wait. We have already secured all content for the Edition and it is shaping up quite nicely.

Also in 2011, we will be making a number of exciting changes to Process, some of which will include a brand new website (a major overhaul to our online store), a new publication, and a little something for all of those who missed out on Edition One! To say we are pumped would be a massive understatement.

We would also like to take the chance to thank all of the wonderful contributors, readers and supporters of Process this year. We wish you all a safe and enjoyable break, and we will see you on the other side!

Unit Editions: A New Direction

Yesterday, design publisher Unit Editions launched a brand new website. With the launch came a beautiful selection of new products including several posters, Design/Research 03: ThreeSix and the long awaited Unit 02 book ‘Supergraphics’. The website takes on a new colour scheme and format, that creates further emphasis on the product and makes for a smoother more refined user experience than its predecessor.

Beautiful publications and shiny websites aside, an interesting new blog post was added, simply titled ‘Unit Editions: A new direction’…

'This new website marks a change of direction for Unit Editions. We are still committed to producing high quality books on graphic design and visual culture. But in recognition of the changing conditions within bookselling – Amazon discounts that are great for book buyers but fatal for small publishers; the demise of the traditional bookshop; the rise of e-publishing – we are working towards building a new publishing model for the internet age. This means two main changes:

– our books, posters and papers will no longer be available through conventional bookshops (physical or online). They will only be available from this website

– we are investigating and experimenting with electronic publishing formats

It is our belief that although the seismic changes in publishing represent dangers, they also throw up opportunities. Five years ago, Unit Editions would not have been possible without substantial investment. Yet now, thanks to the networking channels that exist online, it is possible for a small publishing “unit” to launch, survive and even, in a small way, thrive.'

We here at Process cannot help to feel a little bit excited by this. As a small independent publisher ourselves, whilst we have had a relatively smooth road and currently do not deal with distribution of traditional hardcover books, we are certainly familiar with the politics and complications of publication distribution.

It is refreshing to see that Unit Editions have taken their thinking and concept of the ‘hybrid’ publishing platform to the next level. After reading several articles in last few months about Amazon bullying small publishers, this announcement has brought big smiles to our faces. Although I’m sure many readers will miss being able to pickup Unit Editions publications in their favourite bookstore, I think it is a small price to pay for an overall giant step in a new (and better) direction. It is decisions like these that are leading the way for small publishers, who are forced to re-think conventional methods in the ‘internet’ age. Put simply; a decision like this takes balls, and on that Unit Editions, we congratulate you.

Farewell Grafik

This morning we woke to the unfortunate news that Adventures in Publishing, (publisher of Grafik magazine) are going into liquidation.

Grafik has served as a consistent source of inspiration for us over the years, not only for Process but also for us as graphic designers. I remember the first time we met, many years ago. It was love at first sight—the large format, the weighty uncoated stock, the beautifully designed cover—and this was all before I had even opened to the first page. As I turned the pages, I quickly discovered that Grafik was unlike any other magazine I had seen before: the layouts were considered, yet dynamic, the content was gripping, and the bold use of Avant Garde threw me over the edge. At this stage I believe Grafik had just recently undergone a re-design by MadeThought, and to this day I am still inspired by this particular timeless piece of editorial design. Although it bore an expensive cover price of around AU$30, as a poor student I surrendered my week's lunch money and took home my first copy. I have since religiously purchased every copy of Grafik to date.

Although we don't know the explicit details and reasons for the closure of Grafik we can only speculate that this is another casualty of our current economic climate. Whilst we are living in difficult times, and the news of Grafik saddens us, we can't help but still be excited about what the future of publishing and the printed publication holds. With new hybrid publishing models such as Adrian Shaughnessy/Tony' Brook's Unit Editions and the rise of high quality independently produced publications such as It's Nice That, we still have high hopes for a bright (although different) future for independent publishers and their publications. Although 'the future of publishing' is the hot topic of the day and I am merely skimming the surface, we can't ignore this reminder that times are in fact changing, and new ideas, approaches and thinking are no longer optional.

Grafik has been a benchmark for independent publications worldwide and an institution within the graphic design industry. Many will miss you, and we can only hope to see you re-incarnated in one way or another, hopefully in the not-so-distant future. Thank you, Grafik, for all the memories, and all the best to the Grafik team.

Graphic Design on the Radio Presented by Adrian Shaughnessy (interviewed in Process Journal Edition One). After a long spell of inactivity, Graphic Design on the Radio is back with a new series. First show airs Thursday 15th April 3.00-4.00pm. BST. It's the usual mix of chat and music, but this time with more emphasis on the chat than the music. Future programmes include investigations into the iPad and its likely impact on design and publishing, design blogging, green issues in graphic design, and a look at the short-lived revolutionary 1960s publication Form with its editor and designer Professor Philip Steadman.

First guest is graphic polymath and cultural impresario Cally Calloman. He promises to play music 'half of which has never been heard on the wireless before', and at least one item which will be 'the greatest record ever made.'

Previous shows can be found here, or alternatively tune in to the Resonance FM MP3 live stream.

Process Journal: Edition One

Welcome to the www.processjournal.com.au. Allow us to introduce ourselves: Process Journal is a quarterly released design publication that showcases the very best of Australian and international design. It has been an epic journey for us over the last couple of months, and we have met some amazing and very talented people along the way. With everything from the work of world-renowned studios 3 Deep and Cartlidge Levene, to the upcoming talents of Heydays and Kim Holtermand , we are equally excited about all of our content.

In edition one, we are also lucky enough to have some incredible contributing writers including Dominic Hofstede (AU), who discusses the history of Australian Graphic Design and Matt Judge (UK), who shares his views on the future of design publishing.

We have been overwhelmed by the support, not only locally, but also on an international level, so I would like to take this opportunity to personally thank everyone who has supported and contributed to Process Journal, and enabled us to make our vision a reality. A special thank you must go to Amber Hourigan for her on-going support (without it Process would simply not exist), the extremely talented designer Nicholas Cary for all his hard work, and Catherine Doggett of K.W. Doggett Fine Paper.

A self-designed, -written and -edited publication is new territory for us, and we aim to turn Process into something really special for the wider design community. Don't forget, you can purchase Edition One from our online store, and for regular updates follow us on twitter.

Until next time,
Thomas Williams
Editor in Chief

In line with the Process philosophy, we will be documenting each of the design stages undergone when producing each edition of Process Journal. Posted are photographs taken during our very first design and layout review. At this stage we lay down printouts of the entire publication on our studio floor, and review the overall flow and layout of the publication, along with image selection.
